Class: Introduction to Functional Sculpture

Materials Fee: Students may take one or all classes. Tools are available for sale or rent from the instructor for an additional fee.
Course Description:
​The aim of the "Introduction to Functional Sculpture" workshops is to help participants discover and develop the innate talent that every human being has, while exploring the natural beauty of wood. More importantly, we shall review the dozens of possibilities with this important and integral natural resource. In addition, the students will have the opportunity to learn about the trees and the forest, and how wood reaches our hands.

Course Schedule: 

Class 1: Hair stick & chopstick.
​When: Saturday, May 7 10:00 am – 2:00 pm (4 Hours)

Cost: 120 $ each student.

Material included in the cost: 4 pieces of wood, sand paper 3 grits: 150, 180, 220 & Natural Oil.

Tools provided by student:
1small kitchen knife or 1 carving knife.
1 pair of Leather gloves

This class is designed for students of all ages. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Class 2:​​ Spoon carving.
Date: Sunday, May 8 10:00am 3:00 pm (5 hours)

Cost: $150 each student.

Material included in the cost: 2 pieces of wood, sand paper 3 grits: 150, 180, 220 & Natural Oil.

Tools provided by student:
Gouge 8mm # 5 sweep, knives,
1 pair of Leather gloves

This class is designed for students of all ages. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Class 3: Cutting Boards

Prerequisite: Spoon carving
Date: Sunday, May 15 10:00 am – 3:00 pm (5 hours)

Cost: $170 each student.

Material included in the cost: 2 piece of Oak Board, size: 16" x12" x 1": 12" x 10" x 1", sand paper 3 grits: 150, 180, 220 & Natural Oil.

Class: Miniature Art Workshop

Course Description:
The workshop will provide artists with a basic understanding of miniature art including techniques, supplies, composition, and a lesson in framing. Any medium can be used, although the instructor’s medium of choice is oil paint. A still life will be set up for all to paint and reference photos of the still life will be provided. A supply list is available. Or supplies to paint in oil can be purchased prior to the workshop; please contact Nancy Still, nancy@miniartsupply.biz or 301-977-2190. Several handouts will be distributed.
